Our trip to Mill Mountain Zoo! #ReadForTheWin

Over the summer the kids had won zoo passes for Mill Mountain Zoo in the "Read for the Win" challenge at Radford Library!  Today we made the trip to Roanoke for them to cash in on their efforts.  I am a very proud Momma when I can say "My kids read over 40 hours each this summer!"
We walked the wildflower trail to get to the zoo entrance.  The kids and I have walked this trail during many seasons and spring is always the prettiest, but we still got to see the goldfish the pond.
Aiden was very excited that he got to see the Red Panda having a snack...
...and the porcupine resting after eating his snack! hehehe
All of us really liked the Aviary with the ability to see the birds without having to look through wires.  There was a nice reference board that gave a guide to identify the birds all around!  We looked on the ground and in the trees to spot about 10 different types of birds!  The one pictured above is a special type of pigeon and the most photogenic of the bunch... hehehe.
We also loved using the binoculars on the mountain to take in the view of Roanoke City!
...The Roanoke Civic Center aka "The Berglund Center"...
...Looking over Towers Mall towards Salem, VA...
...and looking over Roanoke City towards Valley View Mall and Roanoke Regional Airport... I love looking out at the view from the top of any mountain! After leaving Mill Mountain Zoo we headed up to the Roanoke Star, to take in the view from a different side of the mountain and hike on the trail so the kids could climb on the big rock!  (they don't know what a big rock is..haha)  All-in-all not a bad way to spend the afternoon.  The zoo only took about 45 minutes to tour and then the kids played on the playground for about 15 minutes before we headed out...then another 15-20 minutes at the star before we were done for...smh.  I think we spent more time driving than we did exploring sadly, but the kids went to sleep pretty easy so I think it was worth it!
