Avoid the Summer Slip #ReadForTheWin2016

As the children and I transition to life in the NRV there are many things that we have to change.  One of those things is which library we call our "home" library.  For awhile now, our home library has been the Moneta Library in Bedford County VA.  It has been a great library and they have hosted some great programs covering a variety of topics, but we need our home library to be closer to home! ...so the kids and I took off today and visited the Radford Library.  We checked out a stack of new books and picked up information about their summer reading program!
Research shows that summer break from school correlates with a slip in reading skills from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next for many children...That doesn't have to be the case for your child.  Can't afford a thousand books?  Never fear there are libraries everywhere... Just take in a picture ID and fill out a simple form.  It's absolutely FREE...as long as you have your books, dvds, cds etc returned by the due date of course...

We have been actively participating in the Summer Reading Program at our old library and we were excited to find that the new library's program was even more exciting!  If you live in the Radford area you can participate by registering online or in person at the library.  The online program has a couple of extra perks and community activities that can earn the kids extra points towards prizes which include:
300 points/5 hours - pick from the treasure chest
600 points/10 hours - free pass to Randolph Park Pool
900 points/15 hours - free Mill Mountain Zoo pass
                  1200 points/20 hours - free book
2400 points/40 hours - name in the newspaper, and invitation to our Star Readers' Party on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 12:00 p.m.
(this is a pilot program...please report any issues to the library to help them work out any remaining bugs in the system...thanks)

If you want to register online click here! My kids have already logged 3 hours of reading time between the three of them and they are excited to keep reading and finding new books at the library!
Ricky Ricotta #3: Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot vs the Voodoo Vultures ...
Aiden, 8, even read two books from cover to cover today!  I love finding books he really enjoys! His latest favorite books are the "Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot vs. ..." series.  They are part comic and part paragraph format.  He can read 113 pages in about 20 minutes, but some of the words are big ones and the books keep his attention... sooooo I'm game!  Keep reading buddy! Emma, 5, really likes the Biscuit books and Isabella, 5, likes the Hello Kitty Phonics Reading program.

**Adults can join in the reading fun this summer too with weekly raffle drawings.  When you read a book drop by the library and fill out a raffle ticket.  Then pick the prize you like and put your ticket in for the drawing.  It's a simple program and they have some pretty neat prizes.  So take the time to drop by the library and check it out... and maybe a new book too?
